This program is designed for those holding a bachelor's degree outside education who aspire to teach elementary grades (K-6). It culminates in a graduate degree while simultaneously meeting the criteria for an Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) Alternative-A Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education (K-6).
The Master of Arts in Teaching is a graduate-level teacher preparation program open to candidates with an accredited bachelor's degree. Applicants must not possess a Class B (baccalaureate-level) teaching credential. Prospective students should consult with both the Teacher Certification Officer and their chosen field advisor for a personalized assessment of any undergraduate coursework gaps before enrolling. ALSDE mandates that all M.A.T. candidates either have an academic major in their intended teaching discipline or, if not evident on transcripts, 32 semester hours relevant to the teaching field with a minimum of 19 upper-division credits.
