History majors can explore diverse academic programs that foster comprehensive historical knowledge. The History Department offers faculty mentorship for graduate school planning, general guidance, pre-professional and pre-law tracks, international studies, secondary education, and arts-related fields. Students may design personalized study plans with faculty mentors in collaboration with the department chair.
Upon graduation, students will: Understand key historical events and their impact, Apply critical historical evaluation, Perform historical investigations, Share historical insights effectively, Utilize historical perspective for civic engagement
These competencies have enabled UAH History alumni to thrive in various professions, including executive leadership (Discovery Channel, Alabama Power), education at all levels, academic research, government analysis, museum management, entrepreneurship, and beyond.
The History BA program trains students to methodically examine historical questions. They learn to locate reliable sources, evaluate evidence critically, synthesize diverse information, compare interpretations, and recognize historical trends. The curriculum covers national heritage alongside global and regional histories, offering international viewpoints. History students cultivate advanced research capabilities and refine their ability to articulate complex ideas through clear written and oral communication.
International applicants must meet all established requirements for admission from secondary schools or from other colleges and universities.
In order to be considered for admission to degree programs with no additional English language training required, applicants must meet the following minimums on the TOEFL or IELTS.
TOEFL (iBT): all sub-scores greater than or equal to 18 OR
IELTS: all sub-scores greater than or equal to 6.0
