The Russian major program consists of 36 semester hours covering language proficiency, cultural studies, literary analysis, and practical Russian applications. Students are highly recommended to participate in study abroad programs and must fulfill a Russian-language internship, which can be completed either locally or internationally. Additionally, Russian majors need to select a minor in another academic discipline, with the option to pursue a double major or dual degree program.
The Russian minor curriculum involves 24 semester hours dedicated to mastering core language competencies: reading comprehension, written expression, auditory understanding, and verbal communication.
Detailed degree requirements, including Charger Foundations coursework, can be found in the World Languages and Cultures section of the UAH catalog. Students with existing Russian proficiency may qualify for advanced placement through testing, allowing them to bypass introductory courses. While majors and minors can earn up to 6 credit hours for skipped courses, these credits won't include letter grades or quality points.
Russian program participants are invited to join cultural enrichment opportunities. The Slavic Club serves as the primary Russian-language student association on campus.
The Department of World Languages and Cultures provides a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages with concentration options in French, German, Russian, or Spanish. Students may specialize in Foreign Language and International Trade or seek teaching certification. While Arabic and Japanese aren't available as majors or minors, they can fulfill BA language requirements or serve as elective courses. Certificate programs are offered in the four primary languages and may include Arabic and Japanese based on current course availability.
