The joint Public Health/Optometry (OD) degree is a collaborative initiative between UAB's School of Public Health (SOPH) and School of Optometry. Participants in this dual-degree program obtain an MPH with a specialization in Population Health. This customized track provides students with comprehensive public health training by fulfilling the MPH core curriculum (grounded in Evidence-based Public Health principles), completing an Applied Practice Experience (Internship), and undertaking an Integrative Learning Experience (Capstone). Learners can choose from various master's-level Public Health courses (including maternal and child health, global health, and health behavior) to create a personalized study plan aligned with their professional aspirations. Dedicated academic guidance helps students tailor their educational pathway.
Visual impairments and ocular conditions represent significant public health challenges worldwide. Public health-trained optometrists play crucial roles in evaluating community vision care requirements, identifying factors influencing visual system disorder treatment and prevention, implementing quality control measures, leading health organizations, and promoting vision care awareness. UAB's MPH program equips graduates to enhance health outcomes for individuals, families, communities, and diverse populations across local and international settings.
