The field of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) centers on fostering the well-being of children, families, and interpersonal relationships. Students and scholars in our program adopt a lifespan ecological approach to understanding development and family dynamics, valuing and supporting diverse individuals, family structures, developmental trajectories, and social environments. Our mission involves generating and implementing innovative research to enhance individuals, family units, interpersonal connections, and communities, while training future professionals for service and leadership roles.
HDFS students pursue graduate studies to qualify for higher-level positions in child, adult, and family services or to gain entry into doctoral programs. The curriculum includes foundational studies in lifespan development, family systems, research methodologies, statistical analysis, plus specialized courses tailored to individual interests and professional aspirations. Research opportunities abound through faculty-led laboratories, The Children's Program, and partnerships with Alabama-based organizations dedicated to serving children and families, offering valuable hands-on learning experiences.
