The Department of Art and Art History provides an MFA program enabling students to focus on various artistic fields while developing compelling works, equipping them for professional roles as visual artists and educators. Established in 1972, the program has propelled countless artists into successful creative careers worldwide. Intentionally small class sizes ensure students receive individual studio space and direct faculty mentorship. The 60-credit MFA curriculum includes graduate studio courses, seminars, art history, critiques, and electives, all to be finished within a six-year timeframe. Throughout their studies, graduate students deliver public talks and showcase their work, concluding with a written thesis and final exhibition.
Main studio spaces are housed on Woods Quad, while Sculpture and Ceramics facilities occupy the Bureau of Mines complex. Garland Hall hosts the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, which rotates contemporary art displays and actively collects works on paper and photography. Woods Hall's Sella-Granata Art Gallery features rotating exhibitions, including student projects and other academically oriented presentations.
