The Department of Journalism and Creative Media provides several pathways to obtain a Master of Arts degree in journalism and media studies. Students collaborate with faculty members committed to upholding journalistic integrity and academic research standards. Each program option mandates completion of 31 credit
hours.
Plan II: Project-based pathway
On-campus option A: Community Journalism Specialization (COM-J): This acclaimed one-year professional program aims to strengthen community journalism by developing skilled practitioners. Participants will investigate innovative approaches to community engagement through modern journalistic techniques and digital advancements. The practice-oriented program emphasizes hands-on experience over thesis work, featuring a summer internship at the University's Digital Media Center, home to Alabama Public Radio and WVUA-23, a Tuscaloosa-based commercial TV station. Applicants for the Community Journalism specialization should express their interest in both their Graduate School application and personal statement.
On-campus option B: This alternative allows students to finish their on-campus degree with either a capstone project or comprehensive examinations. The 31-credit requirement includes 28 hours of graduate coursework as specified in Plan I, plus a 3-hour project or comprehensive exams in JCM 597.
