Our dynamic MA program in German provides diverse study options including literature, linguistics, and interdisciplinary fields, welcoming talented new applicants. Our graduate community, both current and alumni, represents numerous nations (such as Cameroon, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, and more) alongside the US, creating an internationally diverse cohort connected by their passion for German studies.
Students can choose between Plan I (24 course credits plus a thesis) or Plan II (30 course credits without a thesis). Required coursework includes German literature classes, GN 510 History of the German Language, and 3 credits of Middle High German. With permission from the German graduate advisor, students may count 6 credits of graduate-level coursework from related disciplines toward their degree requirements.

Qualification Requirements

Each international applicant must hold the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited institution to be eligible for graduate admission. While individual departments may have more stringent requirements, bachelor degrees from Bologna Accord certified institutions are considered to meet this criterion. We do also consider Indian three-year degrees to be equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree.

TOEFL : The minimum score for admission to a degree program or for non-degree admission is 79 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT).
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): The minimum score for admission to a degree program or for non-degree admission is 6.5.
TOEFL paper-based score of 550 and above
