Geology frequently attracts students who enjoy outdoor activities, traveling, care about environmental and energy challenges, and those seeking careers in geoscience-related fields. The field integrates chemistry, physics, mathematics, and occasionally biology to analyze Earth's processes, requiring students to take a wide range of supporting science courses. Majors also develop specialized lab and fieldwork skills essential for professional geologists.
The Department sponsors two student groups affiliated with professional associations: the American Institute of Professional Geologists and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, both providing regular career-building events. It also oversees the Geology Club and a Sigma Gamma Epsilon chapter, the national Earth Sciences honor society, where students engage in learning, social, and volunteer initiatives, often featuring field excursions. Undergraduates are highly advised to pursue lab and field research guided by faculty and gain academic credit via internships with practicing geoscientists.
