The painting program at The University of Alabama fosters the belief that painting remains a dynamic and ever-changing artistic discipline. Classes cater to students with diverse skill levels, backgrounds, and artistic goals, incorporating both conventional and innovative approaches. Participants are encouraged to think critically and establish frameworks for their personal creative pursuits. The curriculum covers both fundamental and theoretical aspects of painting, offering insights into its historical traditions and contemporary developments.
Painting instruction takes place on the fourth floor of the iconic Woods Hall. Classes are held in a spacious, bright studio equipped with easels, tabourets, wall spaces, and flat work surfaces. Dedicated critique and workshop zones facilitate group discussions and basic canvas stretcher construction. Graduate students receive private studio spaces.
These learning spaces encourage teamwork, allowing novice and advanced students to exchange techniques, concepts, and constructive critiques. All painting students enjoy round-the-clock access to the studio facilities.
