The Chemistry Department provides graduate programs culminating in M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Our interdisciplinary approach equips graduates to become autonomous researchers, offering comprehensive training in chemistry while emphasizing strong communication skills.

Together with the Physics Department, we provide a chemical physics specialization within our chemistry Ph.D. program. We foster cross-disciplinary learning through partnerships with The Maurice Morton Institute of Polymer Science, Institute for Biomedical Engineering Research, Center for Environmental Studies, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, and the Integrated Bioscience program.
The University of Akron's Chemistry program ranks among the institution's premier graduate offerings, maintaining strong collaborations with Polymer Science, Engineering, and Biology departments. Our program hosts 40-60 graduate students annually, along with postdoctoral researchers and visiting scientists from across the globe. Our team includes 13 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, supplemented by adjunct professors from various departments and external institutions who actively participate in graduate education.

We provide pathways to a Ph.D. in chemistry, along with both Thesis and Non-Thesis M.S. options. Our graduate training aims to develop independent researchers while providing access to cutting-edge instrumentation and coursework that enhances professional communication abilities.
