The Political Science Department provides four graduate degree programs: the M.A., M.A. with a Security Studies specialization, Master of Applied Politics (M.A.P.), and the combined MAP/Juris Doctor (J.D.). The M.A. program features focus areas in American government, International Relations/Comparative government, and Criminal Justice. Earning the MA degree involves completing 30 graduate credit hours, consisting of six core seminars, two elective seminars, and six additional political science graduate credits. Degree completion requires students to produce an Essay of Distinction and pass comprehensive examinations during their final program phase.

Qualification Requirements

Three letters of recommendation and a personal statement are required. The Graduate Committee examines applicants' college courses and grades. Applicants with undergraduate degrees or post baccalaureate work will be granted full admission if they have at least a 3.0 G.P.A. (out of 4.0) overall or 3.0 G.P.A. for their last 64 hours of course work and 3.0 G.P.A. in political science course work (or course work in major for non political science majors). No student will be considered for conditional or provisional admission to the program unless s/he has at least a 2.75 overall G.P.A, or at least a 2.75 G.P.A. for the last 64 hours and a 2.75 G.P.A. in political science (or course work in major for non political science majors).

International Students only- As determined by the graduate school, international students admitted to graduate study in Political Science must achieve a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or 213 on the computer-based TOEFL or 79 or higher on the internet-based TOEFL
