Combining rigorous academics with practical training, Towson University's forensic science master's program equips you with the expertise needed for leading positions in the field. The Master of Science in Forensic Science (MSFS) stands as Maryland's sole program accredited by the Forensic Science Education Program Accreditation Commission (FEPAC). This practice-oriented curriculum builds both theoretical knowledge and hands-on forensic lab competencies. Participants can specialize in either the DNA concentration for genetic profiling or the Forensic Analytical Chemistry track covering substance analysis, trace evidence examination, and toxicology. A mandatory forensic research project or thesis completes the program requirements.
Fundamental coursework encompasses forensic chemistry, biological evidence examination, crime scene investigation techniques, professional ethics, legal considerations, expert witness preparation, and research methodology. Specialized electives allow for concentrated study in key forensic disciplines such as postmortem analysis, cutting-edge DNA sequencing, firearm and toolmark examination, advanced microscopic techniques, and lab administration. An optional internship with an operational forensic laboratory is available.
