To earn a master's degree, students must complete at least 30 graduate-level credit hours beyond their bachelor's degree, with 6 credits allocated for thesis work. Each semester, the graduate advisor from the department will provide guidance, meet with students, and approve their course selections. The program mandates a written thesis, and students must successfully defend their completed thesis during a final oral examination conducted by their thesis committee.

The ideal graduate applicant would have a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering with a GPA >3.0.
In addition, he or she needs to provide the following:
