The Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education program centers on advancing research capabilities and training future music educators. Participants complete 20-24 credit hours of foundational coursework, developing specialized knowledge in music education content, teacher preparation, and research methodologies. Students choose one or two specialized tracks, completing at least 9 credit hours in areas such as interdisciplinary fine arts, music curriculum development, conducting, performance, special needs education, music theory, historical musicology, ethnomusicology, psychology, or other faculty-approved concentrations. This Ph.D. program mandates a minimum of 60 semester hours, with residency requirements met through 18 graduate credits within a 12-month span. However, full-time residency is strongly recommended to maximize engagement with music teacher training opportunities.
