The Doctor of Philosophy in History Program mandates completion of sixty (60) graduate credit hours beyond the bachelor's degree. A minimum of thirty (30) hours must be earned at Texas Tech University. PhD candidates select one primary geographic specialization and two secondary areas from these options: United States, Europe, or World History. The program requires thirty (30) graduate hours in the major field and nine (9) hours in each minor field, with at least three (3) historiography credits in every geographic specialization.

student qualifying for admission to the Graduate School may gain admission to the department's doctoral program by meeting the following standards:
Possession of a master's degree which includes at least 18 hours of course work in history.
An overall grade-point average in all graduate work of 3.50.
TOEFL - The minimum TOEFL score required is 550 (paper-based version) or 79 (internet-based version).
IELTS - The minimum IELTS required score is an overall band score of 6.5 on the Academic version
