The Ph.D. in counseling psychology generally takes five to six years of full-time study to complete, which includes a mandatory one-year internship at an accredited training facility (such as a university counseling center, community mental health clinic, hospital, outpatient facility, correctional institution, healthcare network, or psychological services consortium). While the program doesn't provide a standalone master's degree, students can choose to obtain an optional psychology master's while working toward their doctorate. Earning the master's involves completing at least 36 credit hours of required coursework at TTU, which also applies toward the doctoral degree. Counseling psychology doctoral students usually complete 90-120 credit hours of required graduate coursework before finishing their degree, along with meeting other program requirements. The program follows a scientist-practitioner approach, equally emphasizing research and clinical training while promoting multicultural awareness. A mentorship system pairs incoming students with faculty advisors for close collaboration throughout their studies.
