French, a Latin-derived Romance language, remains one of the world's most spoken modern tongues. Approximately 200 million individuals use French daily across Europe, Africa, and North America—including regions of Louisiana and Maine. It serves as an official language for numerous global entities like the African Union, United Nations, and International Olympic Committee. French proficiency opens doors for academic and professional opportunities across four continents. Even stateside, it facilitates communication with international colleagues. In our interconnected world, American French speakers are increasingly valuable. A French degree or minor enhances careers in education, commerce, or diplomacy. Pairing French studies with another discipline adds global perspective to any profession. Beyond career benefits, French literature introduces learners to influential thinkers from the Enlightenment to existentialism.
