The Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry program necessitates completing 120 credit hours and is tailored for students seeking to build a foundation in chemistry for careers where chemical expertise is beneficial or required (such as healthcare, forensic science, environmental conservation, pharmaceutical chemistry, technical sales, and patent law). While a Bachelor of Science is often favored by employers, a B.A. can still equip graduates with adequate chemistry knowledge for roles in smaller labs or for advanced studies toward master's or doctoral degrees. Students can pursue either a B.A. or B.S. in chemistry, both allowing flexibility in selecting minors from Arts & Sciences or other disciplines. Prospective students should consult with an academic advisor before enrolling in a minor.
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry provides four undergraduate degree options. The Bachelor of Science tracks are ideal for those aiming for research-intensive or professional careers in chemistry or biochemistry, while the Bachelor of Arts pathways offer a solid foundation for fields like healthcare, education, or sales. Academic advisors assist with career planning, course selection, and meeting degree criteria. Honors courses in general and organic chemistry are available for Honors College students. Undergraduates are encouraged to engage in faculty-supervised research projects, gaining hands-on experience with specialized methods and instrumentation. The department also hosts active student chapters of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB).
