This program offers gifted writers the chance to refine their skills through a structured academic curriculum and a supportive writing community. The M.F.A. program provides exceptional resources such as workshops and lectures by renowned guest authors, discussions with agents and editors, plus access to facilities like the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center in Kyle and the Clark House in Smithville. Annually, two alumni receive residencies at these prestigious literary sites. Participants gain advanced literary and theoretical knowledge while developing expertise in their chosen genre. Students showcase their artistic growth by mastering their specialization's craft elements and demonstrating professional writing habits.
As a terminal degree, the M.F.A. qualifies recipients for university teaching positions. Alumni often pursue careers in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, or screenwriting while applying their refined writing abilities across diverse professional fields. Texas State's graduates compete effectively with holders of literature doctoral degrees.
