Conversation, a cornerstone of philosophical practice, forms the foundation of the applied philosophy and ethics (MAAPE) program. Learners put theory into action by engaging in the Philosophy Department's Dialogue Series, which features presentations from students and professors across all eight campus colleges, along with guest speakers.
MAAPE candidates compete in Ethics Bowl events at regional and national levels, take part in the Philosophy Symposium, present at the Graduate Student Research Conference, and join the Phi Sigma Tau Honor Society.
The Philosophy Department aims to: maintain, expand, and share philosophical knowledge and its practical uses, develop analytical and ethical reasoning abilities, encourage outstanding faculty scholarship, and facilitate meaningful public discussions across the university and wider community.
Every graduate will gain advanced skills in critical evaluation, original thinking, and moral investigation. MAAPE participants learn to implement philosophical approaches to practical challenges and conduct insightful, theory-based discussions in their selected professional and community environments. MAAPE alumni are prepared for community college teaching roles and may opt to continue their education in philosophy or similar disciplines. Graduates have also secured positions in academic counseling, legal fields, global education initiatives, child welfare services, and diverse community groups.
