The program drives transformation in developmental literacy, mathematics, and learning support. As the nation's first Ph.D. and one of only three Ed.D. programs focused on postsecondary achievement in learning, literacy, and math, it addresses a critical gap by pioneering research that embraces social, cultural, and critical approaches to serve underprepared college students.
This doctoral program cultivates the next generation of scholars, researchers, educational leaders, administrators, instructors, and practitioners in developmental education.
Combining academic rigor with strong support, the program enhances theoretical frameworks, research methodologies, and practical applications across developmental education domains—including literacy, mathematics, and learning assistance—through immersive teaching experiences, scholarly work, and professional engagement. Faculty, staff, and students collaborate across disciplines, communities, and regions in this multidisciplinary initiative.
Graduates pursue diverse career paths. The Ph.D. track trains future researchers and academics to establish robust theoretical foundations in developmental education, while the Ed.D. develops program directors, policymakers, and practitioners who will elevate the field across various settings.
Housed in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, this doctoral program in Postsecondary Student Success prepares experts in learning, literacy, and mathematics. The rigorous yet supportive curriculum advances knowledge and practice through active involvement in teaching, research, and service. Faculty and students work together across disciplines, communities, and geographic regions in this multidisciplinary environment.
