Our curriculum provides students with a comprehensive foundation in mass communication, highlighting core principles shared across advertising, digital media, broadcasting, journalism, and public relations.
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication is committed to academic excellence. Our programs foster professional expertise, research capabilities, theoretical understanding, critical analysis, and ethical decision-making within an inclusive learning environment that shapes students into conscientious media practitioners, researchers, and community members. Degree options include a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication or Bachelor of Science with specializations in Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media, Journalism, or Public Relations. Hands-on learning opportunities are available through campus media outlets like the University Star newspaper, KTSW 89.9 FM radio, Bobcat Update television, Live Oak Studio Production, Bobcat Promotions, and external internships. Students can also compete in national contests through professional associations including the American Advertising Federation, Public Relations Society of America, Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, College Broadcasters Inc., and the Society of Professional Journalists.
The Public Relations (B.S.) program equips students for successful careers in strategic communication management across all media channels. Emphasizing research, creative problem-solving, and global perspectives, the program develops strategic thinkers who uphold rigorous ethical and legal standards. Practical experience is gained through Bobcat PRomotions, the student-operated PR firm, and internships throughout Texas and other major U.S. markets.
Students pursuing any B.S. degree in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication can supplement their studies with a Sports Media concentration.
