The School of Journalism and Mass Communication holds accreditation from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC). Our curriculum provides students with a comprehensive foundation in mass communication, covering essential principles shared across advertising, digital media, broadcasting, journalism, and public relations.
At the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, we are committed to academic excellence. Our programs foster professional expertise, research capabilities, theoretical understanding, critical thinking, and ethical awareness within an inclusive learning environment that shapes students into conscientious media practitioners, researchers, and engaged citizens. Degree options include a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication or a Bachelor of Science with specializations in Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media, Journalism, or Public Relations.
Hands-on learning opportunities abound through student media outlets like the University Star newspaper, KTSW 89.9 FM radio, Bobcat Update, Live Oak Studio Production, and Bobcat Promotions, along with external internships. Students can also compete in national contests through professional associations including the American Advertising Federation, Public Relations Society of America, Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, College Broadcasters Inc., and the Society of Professional Journalists.
The Electronic Media (B.S.) program equips students for diverse careers in media production through coursework focusing on broadcast journalism, audio/video production, content creation, media management, and programming. Students gain practical experience in our cutting-edge Live Oak Hall facilities and at student-operated KTSW radio. Numerous students complete internships with professional media outlets, and our alumni work with major sports franchises, film studios, and broadcast networks across the country.
Students enrolled in any B.S. program within the School of Journalism and Mass Communication can supplement their studies with a Sports Media concentration.
