The School of Journalism and Mass Communication holds accreditation from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC). Our curriculum provides students with a comprehensive foundation in mass communication, highlighting the core principles shared across advertising, digital media, broadcasting, journalism, and public relations.
Our school's mission focuses on achieving excellence. We aim to develop professional competencies, research abilities, theoretical understanding, critical thinking, and ethical standards within an inclusive learning atmosphere that equips students to become conscientious media practitioners, academics, and community members. Degree options include a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication or a Bachelor of Science with specializations in Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media, Journalism, or Public Relations.
Practical experience opportunities include involvement with campus media outlets like the University Star newspaper, KTSW 89.9 FM radio station, Bobcat Update, Live Oak Studio Production, Bobcat Promotions, as well as external internships. Students can also compete through national organizations including the American Advertising Federation, Public Relations Society of America, Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, College Broadcasters Inc., and the Society of Professional Journalists.
The Digital Media Innovation (B.S.) program equips students with comprehensive digital expertise for evolving media careers. Graduates pursue technology-driven roles such as news app developers, multimedia producers, social media managers, web designers, and data analysts across traditional media, tech firms, and startups. This program emphasizes digital strategy and innovative storytelling approaches. All journalism majors pursuing a B.S. degree can supplement their studies with a Sports Media concentration.
