The School of Journalism and Mass Communication holds accreditation from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC). Our curriculum provides students with a comprehensive foundation in mass communication, highlighting the core principles shared across advertising, digital media, broadcasting, journalism, and public relations.
The School's mission is to achieve excellence by developing professional, research, theoretical, analytical, and ethical competencies within an inclusive learning environment. We prepare students to become conscientious media practitioners, researchers, and engaged citizens through our Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication or Bachelor of Science programs with specializations in Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media, Journalism, or Public Relations.
Hands-on learning opportunities are available through campus media outlets like the University Star newspaper, KTSW 89.9 FM radio station, Bobcat Update, Live Oak Studio Production, and Bobcat Promotions, along with external internships. Students can also compete in national contests through professional organizations including the American Advertising Federation, Public Relations Society of America, Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, College Broadcasters Inc., and the Society of Professional Journalists.
The Digital Media Innovation (B.S.) program equips students with comprehensive digital expertise for evolving media careers. Graduates pursue technology-driven positions such as news app developers, multimedia content creators, social media strategists, digital engagement specialists, web designers, and data analysts across traditional media companies, tech firms, and emerging media ventures. This program emphasizes digital strategy and innovative approaches to storytelling through emerging media platforms.
