The College of Science is dedicated to assisting students pursuing careers as educators in science, mathematics, and technology across all grade levels. The Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education (SMTE) program provides specialized coursework for those aiming to teach K-12 STEM subjects. These classes also form a core component of degree programs designed for Teacher Certification. While SMTE itself doesn't confer degrees, certification-track degrees are available through other Science and Technology programs and the College of Education and Human Development. Aspiring Texas elementary and secondary school educators must fulfill both degree and certification criteria. The steps to become a STEM teacher in Texas are detailed below. College of Science or Liberal Arts undergraduates pursuing initial teaching certification for 4-8, 7-12, or EC-12 levels automatically qualify for the Education Minor upon graduation.
Future educators should consult the Certification Officer in the College of Education and Human Development regarding up-to-date certification requirements. Importantly, certification-track students must gain admission to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi's Teacher Education Program before taking 4000-level EDCI or EDUC courses. Admission applications are available in FC 201 at the Undergraduate or Certification Office. Additional details about the Teacher Education Program can be found in the College of Education and Human Development section of this catalog.
