The College of Science is dedicated to assisting students who aspire to become educators in science, mathematics, and technology across all grade levels. The Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education (SMTE) program provides specialized coursework for those pursuing K-12 teaching credentials in these fields. SMTE courses also form a core component of degree programs designed to prepare students for Teacher Certification. While the SMTE program itself does not confer degrees, certification pathways are available through other Science and Technology programs, as well as the College of Education and Human Development. Prospective teachers aiming to work in Texas elementary or secondary schools must fulfill both degree and certification criteria. The following section details the steps and qualifications needed to teach science, mathematics, or technology in Texas. Additionally, undergraduate students from the College of Science or College of Liberal Arts pursuing initial teacher certification for 4-8, 7-12, or EC-12 levels before graduation are automatically eligible for the Minor in Education.
