The Geology Program's mission is to deliver comprehensive, process-focused education grounded in core scientific principles, equipping graduates for rewarding careers and continuous learning. Our program caters to geology and environmental science majors, as well as students from other disciplines seeking to expand their understanding of Earth systems. Geoscience faculty offer majors both a wide-ranging perspective on geological processes and specialized knowledge in specific geoscience areas, preparing them for advanced studies and careers in government, industry, or academia. Students will develop proficiency in scientific investigation, written and verbal communication, master key geological concepts, acquire practical field and lab skills, learn data analysis techniques and relevant computer applications, gain employment readiness for geology-related positions or graduate studies, and cultivate the ability to assess and debate geology's societal impacts.
The Geochemistry concentration examines the connections between liquid solutions, thermodynamic equilibrium and reaction rates, acid-base balance, oxidation-reduction processes, carbon chemistry, organic molecules, nutrient cycles, microbial effects, and geological phenomena. These principles help explain the intricate relationships between Earth's atmospheric, terrestrial, and oceanic systems.
