Electrical Engineers design electrical systems by applying principles from physics, mathematics, circuit design, electromagnetic theory, communication theory, control systems, and signal processing. Traditionally, electrical engineering focused on the generation, transmission, and use of electrical energy. In modern times, its applications have expanded to encompass control systems, robotics, automation, plasma technology, sensors, computers, and imaging. The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) program highlights service, systems-based understanding, and sustainability, with a focus on integrating traditional electrical engineering with emerging areas such as unmanned aircraft systems, maritime sciences, and marine biology, which are particularly relevant to the Gulf Coast region.
Graduates will be able to identify, formulate, and resolve complex engineering challenges using engineering, scientific, and mathematical principles, design engineering solutions that address specific needs while accounting for public health, safety, welfare, and global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic considerations, communicate clearly with diverse audiences, recognize ethical and professional duties in engineering scenarios and make well-informed decisions that weigh the effects of engineering solutions on global, economic, environmental, and societal aspects, work productively in teams by providing leadership, fostering collaboration and inclusivity, setting goals, planning tasks, and achieving objectives, design and perform suitable experiments, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to reach conclusions, and gain and apply new knowledge as necessary through effective learning approaches.
