The computer science degree program is practical in focus, equipping students to launch or advance careers in computing across business, industry, government, or education sectors, or to pursue advanced studies in the field. The comprehensive curriculum stays current with industry demands, focusing on the technical skills needed by today's computer professionals, particularly in software system development, assessment, and integration. The program's mission is to teach fundamental computer science concepts to both undergraduate and graduate students while expanding knowledge through research and service that benefits South Texas, the broader state, and the nation—aligned with its role within a Hispanic-serving institution.

Guided by the university, college, department, and program mission statements, we've established these goals for the undergraduate computer science program: Graduates should be able to excel in computer science roles using cutting-edge technologies while advancing their careers or furthering their education. They should communicate clearly and work collaboratively with diverse teams across different backgrounds, including race, religion, culture, ethnicity, and gender. They must continuously expand their technical expertise and global awareness of computer science while maintaining strong professional ethics and societal responsibility.

To help students achieve these objectives, the BS in Computer Science program is designed so graduates will demonstrate these competencies: Evaluate complex computing challenges and apply computing principles (and related disciplines) to develop solutions. Create, execute, and assess computing solutions tailored to specific requirements within the field. Communicate professionally in various settings. Understand ethical and legal obligations to make sound decisions in computing practice. Collaborate or lead effectively in team-based projects relevant to the discipline.

This specialization prepares students for careers in network administration, system administration, web administration, and cybersecurity, with coursework emphasizing these critical skills.
