Rooted in our academic heritage as a Hispanic Serving Institution, the undergraduate English Program at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi invites students to interact with diverse texts and hone language skills to foster connections both locally and worldwide. Our program encourages students to examine and blend three key areas of English Studies: literature, applied linguistics, and writing. Students are challenged to critically analyze and create texts across various genres, linguistic styles, and cultural traditions for audiences spanning different communities and regions. Through coursework and community initiatives, students cultivate sophisticated critical thinking, creative literacy, and language competencies that equip them to become engaged, ethical participants in diverse societies.
English majors can specialize in either Literary Studies or Writing Studies. The Literary Studies track equips students with analytical tools to interpret and critique texts—including literature and film—within various historical and cultural frameworks. The Writing Studies track focuses on refining students' writing abilities for multiple contexts and purposes while exploring how written communication functions in society through rhetoric, literacy, and composition studies. Both specializations develop students' critical thinking and communication skills, preparing them for diverse career opportunities in fields such as law, business, education, and scientific fields, as well as for advanced academic pursuits.
