Oceanography is a multidisciplinary science that studies the oceans, their contents, and boundaries. Unlike traditional graduate programs that encourage increasing specialization, oceanography welcomes graduates from diverse fields like biology, chemistry, geology, geophysics, mathematics, physics, or engineering, first broadening their knowledge through foundational courses. These core classes encompass the four main branches of oceanography—biological, chemical, geological/geophysical, and physical—along with seminars on current scientific advancements. After gaining this interdisciplinary perspective, students then concentrate on their chosen research area to explore cutting-edge discoveries. The M.S. program requires 32 credit hours of coursework and research. The Master of Science (MS) curriculum fosters innovation and original research, offering both thesis and non-thesis degree paths.
