Coastal engineering involves applying fundamental engineering concepts to assess, plan, build, and oversee systems functioning in coastal regions. This interdisciplinary field draws upon methods from various engineering disciplines. Key application areas encompass: safeguarding and replenishing beaches, coastal constructions, shoreline erosion, nearshore water movement, marine renewable energy sources (wind, waves, tides), effects of natural disasters on coastal infrastructure, water resource development, measurement tools for coastal and offshore data collection, marine excavation and sediment management, port and harbor facilities, and the movement of suspended and dissolved materials.
Our faculty guide research across numerous coastal engineering subjects. Beyond those mentioned, their work includes: anchored and towed marine systems, offshore oil extraction and renewable energy generation, offshore installations, seabed foundation systems, underwater pipelines, structural design for offshore platform hulls and decks, structural dependability, and project oversight. Given the multidisciplinary nature of these subjects, several faculty members hold dual positions in other College of Engineering and College of Geosciences departments, including ocean engineering, petroleum engineering, and oceanography.
