The graduate certificate in Sustainable Urbanism, offered through the Center for Housing and Urban Development within the School of Architecture, is open to all Texas A&M graduate students. This program examines sustainable practices and urban planning in our fast-growing cities, emphasizing the systems that influence our constructed surroundings—from infrastructure and development projects to architectural landscapes and buildings. Participants learn to evaluate how different elements of urban environments interconnect, including zoning patterns, energy systems, construction materials, waste management, ecological diversity, disaster resilience, and transportation access.
Upon finishing the program, graduates will possess the ability to combine and implement sustainable development principles, utilizing both theoretical frameworks and practical visualization techniques to address urban planning issues creatively. The certificate prepares students for careers in both government and corporate sectors as urban strategists and design professionals. Graduates emerge prepared to research and implement cooperative approaches for creating sustainable communities that are habitable, fair, energy-conscious, environmentally balanced, and economically vibrant.
