The Graduate Certificate in Petroleum Geoscience is an interdisciplinary initiative within the Department of Geology and Geophysics that strengthens analytical reasoning and technical competencies essential for petroleum geoscience professionals. This curriculum mandates completion of at least 18 semester credit hours from Geology and Geophysics, with optional Petroleum Engineering courses available as part of standard graduate studies. Supplementary learning opportunities such as workshops, guest lectures, and field excursions expose participants to current challenges in petroleum exploration and extraction. The program's core curriculum features subjects like reflection seismology, seismic data interpretation, sequence stratigraphy, basin evaluation, and 3-D structural analysis with rock characteristics. Annual seminar participation is compulsory. Students must also select at least one elective from designated supporting courses in both Geology/Geophysics and Petroleum Engineering departments. The Certificate is awarded upon successful fulfillment of either an M.S. or Ph.D. in Geology or Geophysics, incorporating these specialized courses. For comprehensive details, prospective students should consult the graduate program director.
