The Historic Preservation certificate, overseen by the Center for Heritage Conservation within Texas A&M University's Department of Architecture, is available to graduate students across the university. This interdisciplinary program builds upon rigorous academic foundations, equipping students for professional paths in preservation, architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, regional studies, anthropology, archaeology, engineering, and allied disciplines. The curriculum covers essential skills including historic structure documentation, preservation methodologies, building technology fundamentals, sustainable development considerations, legal frameworks, conservation planning, archaeological resource protection, cultural asset management, community involvement, and heritage tourism. As preservation inherently bridges multiple disciplines, the certificate's structure embodies this integrative approach, examining how preservation connects with and enhances other domains involving cultural assets and constructed environments.
Certificate graduates will exhibit comprehensive understanding by recognizing preservation requirements and applying specialized knowledge from their coursework to preservation challenges in their thesis, dissertation, or design projects. They'll gain proficiency in preservation philosophies, ethical considerations, and applicable regulations. Completion prepares students for careers in preservation-related fields such as architecture, urban planning, or archaeology, equipping them to examine how both natural and human-made surroundings embody our collective cultural and historical narratives.
