Political Theory provides students with chances to critically examine and ethically evaluate political actions, norms, and experiences through diverse viewpoints. Faculty expertise spans global and comparative political theory, the evolution of political ideas, democratic principles, feminist perspectives, social science philosophy, modern political philosophy, tolerance history and theory, and enlightenment thought. They deliver a dynamic selection of seminars exploring historical, current, and cross-disciplinary methods in political theory, while motivating students to cultivate both specialized knowledge and a comprehensive grasp of political science practice. Graduate research assistants collaborate with faculty on publications and conference materials as early as their initial year.
The Theory Convocation brings together political theory students, faculty, interdisciplinary colleagues, and visiting scholars in a relaxed forum to share ongoing research. The program additionally hosts yearly conferences on political theory themes and currently oversees the Texas Chapter of the Conference for the Study of Political Thought. Student research benefits from support not just from the Political Science Department, but also from the Center for Humanities Research, the College of Liberal Arts, and various affiliated departments and research initiatives.
