The Bachelor of Science in Oceanography program: 1) Equips students with comprehensive knowledge about oceans and their influencing factors, preparing them for marine science careers or related fields, 2) Develops students' abilities to access, assess, and interpret extensive oceanographic data from long-term research and monitoring systems, and 3) Focuses on enhancing analytical reasoning and solution-finding capabilities.
The BS in Oceanography offers four specialization tracks: Ocean Observing Science and Technology (OOST), Ocean Climate (OC), Marine Ecosystems Processes (MEP), and Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry (MCG). While all tracks share core requirements, each allows students to focus on specific interests. The OOST track emphasizes statistical methods and ocean monitoring technologies, with all students developing expertise in managing and interpreting large datasets. The OC track concentrates on advanced mathematical applications for studying ocean-climate relationships, while maintaining the data analysis focus. The MEP track highlights biological and ecological systems, enabling students to apply biological principles to marine studies. The MCG track focuses on chemical and geochemical aspects, providing students with tools to examine oceanic processes through these scientific lenses.
