The Marine Engineering Technology License Option (MARR LO) program prepares students to become engineering officers on ocean-going ships. This curriculum represents a power-focused specialization within traditional Mechanical Engineering Technology. Building on a solid foundation in mathematics, science, and engineering courses, students advance to study ship propulsion systems, electrical power generation, and distribution equipment. Marine Engineering Technology examines power cycles, principles, and techniques for transforming different energy forms into usable power. With the maritime sector transitioning to cleaner energy solutions aboard ships, alternative fuels and Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS) are becoming standard. The program covers the selection and operation of primary components and auxiliary systems within power cycles. Marine engineering coursework is enhanced with studies in automation and control systems, naval architecture, and practical maritime applications of electrical engineering principles.
Beyond the standard Marine Engineering Technology degree requirements, MARR LO Cadets must fulfill qualifications for a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) from the USCG. MMC requirements are governed by international conventions, federal laws and regulations, and policies set by the USCG and Maritime Administration (MARAD). These credential requirements may change due to developments at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), congressional legislation, federal regulatory updates, and consultations among the USCG, MARAD, and Maritime Academies. Graduates who successfully complete the program become eligible to take the U.S. Coast Guard licensing examination for Third Assistant Engineer on vessels of any size operating on oceans, for both steam and motor vessels, and receive the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) international endorsement as Officer-In-Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW). An unlimited tonnage gas turbine endorsement is also available.
