The National Science Foundation's Engineering Research Center for Precise Advanced Technologies and Health Systems for Underserved Populations (PATHS-UP) aims to tackle the significant challenge of reducing the human and economic impact of diabetes and heart disease in underserved communities. The combined Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and Master of Public Health in Occupational Safety and Health program addresses the need for engineers who have formal health education to enhance public quality of life in these regions. Specifically, our engineering students will engage directly with the health challenges common in these communities and contribute to developing technologies that overcome typical barriers faced by point-of-care devices. Another objective of the PATHS-UP initiative is to attract and train a diverse cohort of scientists and engineers who will pioneer future technologies to advance health outcomes in underserved areas. This dual-degree program is designed to achieve this secondary goal, thereby supporting the primary objective.
