Industrial and systems engineering is a field dedicated to creating, implementing, enhancing, and managing interconnected systems involving people, materials, and infrastructure within diverse organizations that manufacture products or provide services. Similar to other engineering disciplines, it addresses challenges by applying specialized mathematical and scientific knowledge alongside engineering principles. Key differentiators of this field include its distinct emphasis on human factors and the measurement and systematic reduction of uncertainty in production systems. The discipline encompasses five primary areas: advanced manufacturing, operations research, data science and machine learning, health and human systems, and systems engineering.
