Significant advancements are occurring at local, regional, and global levels in environmental awareness. Ecological dangers manifest in various ways, from microbial risks and hazardous materials to the broader consequences of human actions on delicate ecosystems. Consequently, there's increasing acknowledgment that addressing environmental challenges demands creative, interdisciplinary viewpoints and technology-driven methods. The Bioenvironmental Sciences program (BESC) was developed in collaboration with industry experts to align with the latest insights on skills required for future environmental careers. Students will gain preparation for diverse opportunities in environmental science, spanning research and development, consulting, waste remediation, site evaluation and sampling, as well as environmental law. BESC graduates secure positions in federal, state, and local environmental agencies, industries handling hazardous waste management, and advocacy or educational organizations. Moreover, the program's robust scientific foundation equips students for advanced studies in various professional and graduate fields.
The outlined curriculum blends core technical courses with flexible electives, enabling students to tailor their academic path. It's recommended that students concentrate on a specialization by selecting electives from areas like conservation/ecology, policy/ethics/regulations, physical environment studies, engineering, plant sciences, genetics/biotechnology, and general environmental topics. The Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology also fosters extracurricular initiatives essential for shaping competent environmental professionals.
