The Bachelor of Arts in Society, Ethics, and Law (SEAL) program equips students for professional paths in legal practice, public service, and similar domains. This curriculum blends in-depth studies of ethical, societal, governmental, and jurisprudential theories with historical and social science approaches to examine pertinent subjects.
The SEAL program aligns with the American Bar Association's (ABA) guidance for undergraduates to select challenging academic disciplines while honing research and writing capabilities. Specifically, the ABA recommends developing these fundamental competencies: analytical reasoning, textual analysis, composition and revision, verbal expression and comprehension, investigative methods, interpersonal networking and teamwork, understanding of America's historical and cultural evolution along with global cultural diversity, commitment to civic engagement and equity, and legal system familiarity.
SEAL participants are advised to fulfill their mathematics requirement with logic and include public speaking in their coursework. The major requires two ethics classes, two social/political theory courses, two legal philosophy seminars, a two-part legal history sequence, two social science electives, either epistemology or philosophy of language, plus technical writing. An internship is mandatory for SEAL students. While no minor is compulsory, the program encourages considering supplementary minors to develop additional specialized skills.
