The Juris Doctor (J.D.) serves as a professional graduate degree and the foundational credential needed to enter legal practice in the U.S. Temple University offers this degree through a three-year full-time track or a four-year evening/part-time option. The J.D. curriculum at Temple equips students with essential legal knowledge, practical abilities, hands-on training, and professional ethics needed for successful law careers. Through early exposure in Litigation Basics and Transactional Skills courses, students begin practical training within their first semester, complemented by Temple's renowned Legal Research and Writing program that builds the exceptional practice skills associated with its alumni. A comprehensive selection of doctrinal, experiential, and interdisciplinary courses, all taught by distinguished faculty, guarantees every student receives top-tier legal training regardless of their specialization.

Jurisprudence examines legal evolution, philosophical foundations of law, historical transformations in legislation, and societal impacts on legal frameworks. This discipline enhances legal professionals' contextual understanding by tracing the progression of legal thought. Much like studying computer architecture improves software proficiency, jurisprudence strengthens practical legal application skills. Temple's jurisprudence program enables students to examine law through both theoretical and practical lenses while refining critical thinking abilities to cultivate reflective practitioners and progressive legal reformers. These courses provide platforms to assess our legal framework, examine connections between law and equity, and contemplate alternative regulatory approaches. Students gain insight into how value judgments fundamentally influence legal decision-making processes.
