The Psychology doctoral program provides rigorous training focused on academic excellence, innovative research, effective teaching, and real-world applications. Students pursue specialized tracks within the Psychology Ph.D., leading to careers as researchers, educators, and practitioners. The Cognition and Neuroscience track explores diverse questions spanning cognitive processes, perceptual systems, and neural mechanisms, offering students interdisciplinary research opportunities. Faculty in this program frequently collaborate with colleagues across Psychology and other university departments such as Computer Science, Geology, and Marketing. Neuroscience-focused students can enhance their PhD with an interdisciplinary Neuroscience Specialization through Temple University's program, involving faculty from Biology, Pharmacology, Physical Therapy, and Psychology. Those interested in decision science research may apply to the joint Decision Neuroscience PhD program offered with the Fox School of Business. For students seeking a standalone neuroscience degree, we offer a two-year MS program in Neuroscience: Systems, Behavior and Plasticity.

Master's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline: A master's degree is not required.
Bachelor's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline: A baccalaureate degree in Psychology is strongly recommended. Depending on the area of interest, a bachelor's degree in a biology-related discipline may be appropriate.
Statement of Goals: In approximately 500 to 1,000 words, state your interest in Temple's program and outline your research goals, future career goals, and academic and research achievements. This statement should also identify your first, second, and third choice of faculty with whom you are applying to work. If your choice of potential faculty mentor is not included, your application may not receive full review.
Standardized Test Scores:
GRE General Test: Optional. Scores may be submitted if available. Note that if applying for the Clinical Psychology area, GRE scores will not be considered in admissions decisions. Applications for the Cognition and Neuroscience, Developmental Psychology, and Social Psychology areas will receive equal consideration with or without GRE scores.
GRE Subject Test in Psychology: Not required.
Applicants who earned their baccalaureate degree from an institution where the language of instruction was other than English, with the exception of those who subsequently earned a master's degree at a U.S. institution, must report scores for a standardized test of English that meet these minimums:
TOEFL iBT: 105
IELTS Academic: 7.0
The minimum admissions standard for all graduate students is ordinarily an undergraduate grade point average of B or 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or the functional equivalent for students who have attended universities outside of the United States.
