The Geography and Urban Studies PhD program explores urban and environmental dynamics through a geographic lens, examining both domestic and global contexts. Our curriculum centers on four key areas: geographical methodologies, globalization trends, equity issues, and sustainable development practices. Students develop expertise in conducting theoretically grounded, evidence-based research across urban and rural landscapes, mastering interdisciplinary approaches to human-environment interactions. The program emphasizes analytical techniques like GIS, spatial statistics, and qualitative methods. Temple University's College of Liberal Arts offers this 51-credit PhD program to equip scholars with specialized skills for solving contemporary challenges. You'll concentrate on geographic perspectives of urban and environmental systems in diverse global contexts, with particular attention to: Spatial analysis techniques incorporating remote sensing and qualitative methodologies; Globalization phenomena such as capital movement, cultural shifts, and policy transformations; Equity studies examining economic, gender, and racial disparities; Sustainable development focusing on ecological systems, environmental equity, and land management. Through diverse theoretical frameworks, you'll analyze global patterns and processes while gaining methodological proficiency to tackle today's pressing economic, environmental, political, and social issues.
