Horticulture is the field dedicated to cultivating, growing, installing, and sustaining designed landscapes while preserving, rehabilitating, and overseeing both developed and natural green spaces. Temple's horticulture program combines rigorous scientific training with practical, experiential learning. To foster comprehensive awareness of both natural and human environments, students also engage with a robust liberal arts education. Our distinctive program stands among the select few that merge horticulture with landscape architecture, offering students holistic insight into the landscape continuum—from design and plant cultivation to urban and suburban landscape implementation and care. Students explore the connections between horticultural practices, technological advancements, and ecological systems while cultivating environmentally conscious approaches. The program actively promotes sustainable alternatives to outdated, ecologically harmful methods like excessive pesticide use, herbicide dependency, wasteful irrigation, and the cultivation of invasive species. Career paths for graduates span diverse sectors including landscape services, ecological restoration, nursery operations, urban tree management, floral cultivation, public gardens, historical garden preservation, therapeutic horticulture, and indoor plant design. Academic research, education, and community outreach also present fulfilling avenues within this dynamic profession. The Bachelor of Science in Horticulture curriculum is primarily based at Temple's Ambler Campus, with select courses available at the Main and Center City campuses.
