The Latin American Studies Major is an interdisciplinary program centered on analyzing social challenges in Latin America. The region's art, literature, and religious philosophy have gained worldwide acclaim for their excellence and influence on global culture. However, Latin America continues to face severe social disparities, alongside rapid urbanization, significant environmental transformations, and political instability with far-reaching consequences. This major provides diverse courses addressing these complex topics. Students must complete twelve 3-credit Latin American Studies courses and achieve proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese for reading and speaking.
Temple University's College of Liberal Arts offers a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies, allowing students to adopt a vibrant, multifaceted approach to understanding the region's cultures, economies, languages, politics, and societies. This 123-credit program uses Latin America as a lens to investigate cross-disciplinary themes. Examine the region's vital global role and strategic importance through key topics like U.S.-Latin American diplomacy, Latinx studies in the U.S., migration patterns, racial and ethnic identity, activism, and beyond. Graduates will develop contemporary expertise about Latin America through multiple analytical frameworks, assess economic growth and international relations from comparative viewpoints, blend language training with real-world cultural interactions, enhance their writing and analytical abilities, comprehend the expanding U.S. Latino community, participate in study abroad programs for cultural immersion, and investigate Latin American creative expressions, history, governance, and belief systems through interdisciplinary coursework.
