The Master of Music (M.Mus.) performance program provides specializations in piano, organ, strings, wind instruments, percussion, or vocal studies. Graduate candidates must fulfill a core curriculum encompassing research, music history, and music theory (totaling nine credit hours). Typically, students complete 34-36 graduate credits post-baccalaureate, usually spanning four semesters of residency. The M.Mus. curriculum follows a consistent structure across all specializations: 8 credits in the major area, 3 credits each in music history and theory, 3 research credits, 2 recital credits, with remaining credits allocated to specialized courses, music literature, electives, or open electives based on the chosen specialization.
This program cultivates exceptional performance skills and comprehensive musical understanding, evidenced through a culminating two-part performance project. Candidates present two significant public performances - one solo recital, plus either another solo recital, ensemble performance, concerto with orchestra, or lecture recital related to their principal instrument. Final semester requirements include written and oral comprehensive examinations. Full-time graduate students must participate in convocations and ensemble performances throughout their studies.
